Super Heating & Air, an EPA-certified HVAC company serving the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex, recommends twice-yearly tune-ups regardless of symptoms — but if your system is exhibiting any of these six signs, schedule sooner. Most are early warnings of failures that get expensive if ignored.
1. Energy bills creeping up year over year
Compare your July and August electric bills to the same months last year. Modest increases (5–10%) usually reflect rate changes; sustained 15%+ increases without weather changes typically indicate degraded HVAC efficiency. Coil contamination, low refrigerant, or worn capacitors all silently raise consumption before they cause obvious failures.
2. Longer runtime to hit set-point
If your AC used to cycle off after 20–30 minutes and now runs 45+ minutes to reach the same temperature, system capacity is dropping. Common causes: dirty coils, low refrigerant charge, failing compressor, or undersized airflow. A tune-up catches the first three; the fourth typically requires diagnostic work.
3. New noises — clicking, buzzing, screeching, rattling
Different noises mean different things:
- Clicking on startup that didn't used to happen — often a failing relay or capacitor
- Buzzing from the outdoor unit — usually electrical (loose contactor, failing capacitor)
- Screeching from the indoor unit on startup — typically a worn blower bearing
- Rattling — loose panel screws, worn isolation mounts, or in serious cases, a compressor mounting issue
Don't ignore new noises. Cheap to address now, expensive to address after a failure cascade.
4. Uneven cooling between rooms
If one bedroom is 5+ degrees warmer than the rest of the house, the cause is one of: ductwork imbalance, blocked register, low refrigerant charge, or undersized supply trunk to that room. A tune-up usually identifies the first two; the latter two need diagnostic work to confirm.
5. Humidity feels wrong
If your AC seems to be running plenty but the air feels clammy, the system isn't dehumidifying properly. In DFW that's a real comfort issue — typical summer humidity loads require AC equipment to remove 8–12 pints of moisture per hour during peak afternoons. Symptoms include condensation on registers, musty smells, and visible damp spots near supply outlets.
6. The system is over 10 years old and hasn't been professionally serviced in 18+ months
Even without specific symptoms, aging equipment that hasn't been touched in over a year is statistically much more likely to fail in the next peak season. A precision tune-up is the cheapest insurance policy you can buy on an aging system. If the tune-up reveals end-of-life conditions, our HVAC evaluation provides a written assessment of remaining useful life and helps you plan ahead.
What to do next
Most of these signs are addressable with a routine tune-up. If the tune-up surfaces a deeper issue, the technician documents it in writing with a no-pressure repair quote — and the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you choose to proceed.
